Gold plated and gold filled items
Gold plated items contain a thin layer of gold over a different piece of metal – usually copper, nickel or other metals.
Gold filled items consist of gold fused with a base metal, usually brass or other base metals. Gold filled items are generally thicker and heavier than gold plated items.
We will buy gold items with a marking, however, the value of plated and filled items will be lower than gold items containing a higher karat purity.
Unsure whether your items contain precious metals and what these items may be worth? Muzeum encourages our customers to take advantage of our FREE service! Our experts provide the most accurate and fair market value, completely free of charge.
We use various methods when examining precious metal items, which include:
Inspect the item for any hallmarks
A resourceful method when determining gold purity is to look for hallmarks.
Most precious metal items include hallmarks, which are markings engraved into the item, to help indicate the purity of the metal.
Standard gold markings are 10k Gold - 10K/417 (41.6%)
14k Gold - 14K/585 (58.3%)
18k Gold - 18K/750 (75%)
22k Gold - 22K/917 (91.6%)
Common locations for hallmarks can be found on the inside of a ring or near the clasp of a necklace
In order to clearly see the hallmarks on these items, we recommend using a magnifying glass or a loupe.
Plated/Filled items also have common markings such as GF (Gold Filled), GP (Gold Plated)
Use a strong magnet
Another simple method to help in determining whether or not your item is gold is by using a magnet.
We recommend using a strong magnet, such as an earth magnet.
Precious metals such as gold should NOT get picked up by the magnet.
When you hold the magnet near your items, if the item is attracted to the magnet then that part is not made of any precious metal.
If the item does not react to the magnet this does not mean that it is gold.
The item can be heavily plated, which is why our experts use x-ray technology to ensure you receive a fair assessment on your items
Confirm the purity
Once the item is confirmed to be made of precious metals, our next step is determining the purity of the item.
With our X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) machine technology, we are able to determine the exact metal breakdown of your items allowing us to give you a fair market value for your gold items.
The XRF machine is an x-ray that recognizes various metal compositions found within a precious metal item, informing us of the exact purity of the metal.
Following these simple steps allows Muzeum to make sure you get paid what you deserve for your items!

Numismatic :
Numismatic collectibles tend to carry a value higher than its precious metal content and face value. Many factors are involved when determining whether a coin is numismatic, however, numismatic items commonly have a limited mintage, a specific variation or there may have been an error during the minting process. Our experts have been identifying and grading numismatic items for over a decade – so feel free to take advantage of our free service!
Commemorative:
Commemorative items are issued to honor and celebrate historical events or issues throughout our past. These coins are mass produced with the intention of regular circulation and are not classified as numismatic. There are many commemorative coins that contain precious metal content within them, increasing their value.
Proof:
Proof items were fashioned as distinct early samples of issued coinage throughout history in order to assist with checking dies and for extensive archival use. Today, proof items consist of coinage minted in large numbers with the intention of being sold to collectors or numismatists. Nearly all countries have issued proof coinage. Majority of these precious metal items are worth their value in gold or silver coins – however there are some cases in which they can be worth more.
Uncirculated:
These items generally follow one of these classifications:
Released to the public but not intended for circulation. These coins have not been handled by human hands.
Graded by a reputable company with a grade of Mint State (MS) 60+
Uncirculated coinage are struck with specific adjustments during the minting process, which results in a more satin-like finish
All uncirculated coins are available for purchase from mints or dealers. Again, these items have never been handled by human hands.
Is your piece authentic?
There are many methods that can be used when determining whether or not your coin is authentic. The simplest approach is to verify the weight, diameter and metal content of the coin. Generally, when coins are manufactured by Mints such as Royal Canadian Mint, US Mint, or Royal Mint the weight, diameter and metal used are precise and consistent.
Counterfeit items will usually not be consistent with one of the three factors regarding the coins weight, diameter and/or metal content. It is difficult to match the exact quality of the coin based on the sophisticated and precise mintage qualities that originate from government issued mints.
Our trained experts at Muzeum and the Great Canadian Roadshow have acquired the skills needed when determining whether a coin is authentic or counterfeit. Leave the verifying and testing to us!

Bullion is defined as investment grade precious metals such as gold, silver and platinum. Bars (or ingots & wafers) and coinage are weighed by Troy Ounces or Grams and comes in various forms – including coins, rounds, bars. In Canada, investment grade gold must have of a purity of 99.5% or more and silver must have a purity of 99.9% or more to be considered bullion. Bullion is commonly purchased for investment purposes and are therefore tax exempt.
Coins
Coins are minted by government entities, which also features a legal tender value added to it. While the value of the precious metal should always be higher than the face value of the coin, these pieces individual value have premium costs as the designs are much more detailed.
Popular coins that we purchase include, but are not limited to:
Canadian Maple Leaf from the Royal Canadian Mint
Eagle from the United States Mint
Libertad from the Mexican Mint
Krugerrand from the South African Mint
Kangaroo from the Australian Mint
Philharmonic from the Austrian Mint
Britannia from the Royal Mint
Bars / Ingots / Wafers & Rounds
Our rates for bullion bars, ingots, wafers and rounds are primarily based on the market value for gold, silver or platinum – and their respective weight and manufacturer.
Bars and rounds do not have a legal tender attributed to them and are generally sold at a lower premium than a coin.
Muzeum guarantees the highest payout for your bullion products – and our best price guarantee means we will always beat any competitors quote!

What is my paper money worth?
The value of paper money is dependent on 3 main factors:
The overall amount of bills printed (The less printed, the higher its potential value)
The prefix and serial number (e.g. sequential, radar, or low serial numbers)
The variation of bills depending on portrait, errors and signatures.

Current Market Prices
Muzeum determines the market value of gold, silver and platinum using Kitco’s current live market prices.
To ensure we offer competitive and accurate rates, our internal program continuously monitors market value and updates prices by the minute so that we can offer the best price guaranteed.
Weight & Purity
When determining market value for gold, silver, and platinum we take into consideration variables such as weight and purity. Higher levels of purity, as well as, larger weights within any lot can increase its potential value.
Purity: Gold, silver and platinum items that contain a higher level of purity, based on karat, will receive higher payments than those of a lower purity.
For example, gold is often mixed with other metal alloys such a copper, zinc, and even silver. This lowers the purity of the gold and simultaneously lowers the value of the item.

Rare or Collectible Pieces
Great Canadian Roadshow employs a team of trained experts who provide evaluations at no additional cost in order to assist you with determining a fair market value. Manufacturers around the world use markings, engravings and specific stamps to identify the piece they crafted. These markings can wear off over time, or in some cases, even be replicated, which makes it difficult to determine the level of purity and a fair value. Our staff are fully trained with industry standard tools, such as the X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analyzer and other various spectrometers, which help determine the purity of our lots.
Item-specific characteristics may potentially increase the value of your gold, silver or platinum piece. These specific characteristics such as diamonds and brand name companies are taken into consideration when determining if your piece has a greater value rather than its raw metal value.
