Have you ever wondered what the markings on your gold jewellery mean? When you see a marking like 18k (or 750) – it is depicting the purity of gold within the piece. For example, 18k Gold Jewellery is 75% pure gold, with the remainder being a different metal. When the purity of gold in an item is high, the payout will be much higher. Gold plated, gold filled and rolled gold jewellery generally have 1/10th or 1/20th marking on them – which means the gold is just the outer coating. Due to this, the payout for gold filled and plated jewellery is much lower. However, any piece that is marked, Muzeum will buy.
Gold Plated means that there is a thin layer of gold over another piece of metal – usually copper, nickel or silver. This is seen a lot in costume jewellery, however, there are negative effects to this – such as turning your skin green or causing skin irritation.
Gold Filled jewellery has gold bonded to a base metal, usually sterling silver or brass. Gold filled jewellery is generally much thicker.

The easiest way to determine whether or not your item is truly gold, is to look for the hallmarks. Hallmarks are stamps/markings on the pieces that help indicate the purity of the metal within the piece. Standard gold markings are: 9k (37.5% pure), 10k (41.6% pure), 14k (58.5% pure), 18k (75% Pure), 22k (91.6% pure).
Common locations for jewellery are in the inside of a ring or near the clasp of a necklace, for example. More often than not, you will need a magnifying glass or a “loupe” to clearly see any hallmarks.
Common markings for plated items:
GF – Gold Filled
GP or GEP – Gold Plated or Gold Electroplated
A simple way to determine whether or not your item is real gold, is with the magnet test. We recommend getting a strong magnet that you can find at your local hardware store, for example an earth magnet.
The process is very simple. Gold and other precious metals such as Silver, are non-magnetic. Hold the magnet near your items, if your chain, ring, or coin are instantly attracted to the magnet, your items are not made of the precious metal gold.
Another thing to keep in mind is that on most necklaces or bracelets, the clasp itself is not made of gold. So if you are only seeing a reaction from the clasp, but not the rest of the piece, your item could be gold.
However, if there is no reaction – it does not necessarily mean that your item is gold. The item could still be heavily plated or even counterfeit, which is why we always recommend using our experts and x-ray technology to always ensure a fair and accurate assessment of your precious items.
Once you have determined whether or not your item is made of a precious metal, the next step is determining the purity of it. While there are “at home” ways of determining the purity, they are not 100% accurate. With our XRF machine technology, we are able to determine the exact metal breakdown of your items.
